Chapter 3: Choosing the Right Tattoo Removal Business for Your Needs

It won’t take you long to find dozens of places in your area that offer tattoo removal. How do you know which one is the right one for you? Important factors to consider before choosing a specialist include: their experience, the technology, and the pricing structure.

Experience

You should always choose a business with a strong background in tattoo removal. In other words, you don’t just want a tattoo parlor that happens to also offer tattoo removal. You want professionals that specialize in it. This will ensure that they have the right kind of lasers and know how to use them properly.

Technology

Speaking of the right lasers, you need to choose a business that has tattoo removal technology. There are hundreds of lasers out there, and if you choose a business that is using the wrong type of laser it could severely damage your skin or not remove your tattoo completely. As noted earlier, you want to find a laser with either nanosecond or picosecond technology—recall that both work but that picosecond lasers accomplish the removal in fewer treatments with a significantly less chance of scarring due to their higher pulse speed.

Pricing

That leads us to pricing. The tradeoff with nanosecond vs. picosecond laser removal is that nanosecond is less expensive while requiring more treatments, while picosecond is pricier but takes fewer treatments. We’ll talk more about the math of comparing the two in a second, but keep that tradeoff in mind while we walk through the other factor: the pricing structure.

Most tattoo removal companies use the same basic pricing structure. Tattoo removal is typically charged on a per square inch basis, with a minimum and maximum price per treatment. In other words, whatever you pay will be calculated per square inch and then multiplied by the number of treatments needed.

So if you have a 3 square inch tattoo, and your tattoo removal company charges $99 per square inch, you will look to pay about $297 per treatment. Most companies, like us here at Pasadena Aesthetic Laser Center, will offer package discounts. So if you purchase a group from the same business you can get a discount on your overall purchase.

You can find tattoo removal companies with pricing ranging from $50 to $125 per square inch, depending on where you are located in the country and the type of equipment they use (a quick search on google can tell you your options). This is where it becomes critically important to look into the technology used for your tattoo removal treatment.

Remember to Check the Math!

If you choose company A with Picosure charging $99 per square inch, a three square inch tattoo will cost you $1,188 to remove if it’s completely removed in 4 treatments.

If company B uses a nanosecond laser only charging $59 per square inch, but that same tattoo takes 7 treatments to remove, you’re looking at paying up to $1,239 for the same tattoo to be erased.

The moral of the story: do the math for the long term when calculating the cost to remove your tattoo. The newest lasers often cost the most money per square inch, but the savings are in the long run when you need fewer treatments to completely remove the tattoo. Not to mention your tattoo will be gone months earlier if you choose picosecond technology over nanosecond.

Tattoo Removal Consultations and Evaluations

Because every tattoo is different, almost every tattoo removal clinic in the country is going to require that you come in for an initial consultation before starting treatment. This is where you will learn what to expect and discuss your individual tattoo removal needs.

In most major cities, this initial consultation is usually free of charge. It will cost you nothing to go in and have them look at your tattoo and tell you what they can do for you.

At this consultation, feel free to ask any and all questions you have about the process. Don’t be afraid to ask them what kind of technology they use (if you haven’t looked into that already), what their pricing structure is, and what kind of experience they have with tattoo removal.
